Performer Notes
  • Recorded in 1947. Includes liner notes by Paul E. Affeldt.
  • Brun Campbell as a teenager took some lessons from Scott Joplin. During 1945-1949, his playing was captured on some private recordings, some of which were later released on an LP from the Euphonic label. This 2001 CD has all of that music plus other previously unreleased piano solos and brief verbal discussions/interviews. The recording quality is just so-so, but Campbell (in his early sixties at the time) is heard in fine form on such numbers as "Essay in Ragtime," "Lulu White," "Brun's Slow Drag," "Twelfth Street Rag," and "Maple Leaf Rag." And thanks to these valuable tapes (which include a lot of alternate versions), Brun Campbell can be heard today rather than being completely lost to history. ~ Scott Yanow
Professional Reviews
JazzTimes (3/02, p.70) - "...Campbell was the only working player from the ragtime era ever to record....the relentless drive lifts the music to great heights..."
