Clarinetist Chris Speed is well known for his tireless work with a handful of ensembles in New York's downtown avant-jazz scene, including Bloodcount, Myra Melford's Same River, Twice, and the Dave Douglas Sextet. Here he teams with drummer Chris Cheek and bassist Stephane Furic Leibovici for a collection of tunes composed by Leibovici. There are traces of gypsy music, free jazz, and post-bop here, but what stands out is the empathetic interplay among the trio in the creation of this spacious, haunting, and quite beautiful music.
