For those still wondering what the whole '90s swing thing is about, one could do worse than pick up this compilation drawn from the Elektra label roster. Surprisingly, the earliest track included here--former Stray Cat Brian Setzer's "Ball And Chain"--stems from 1994, so the trend actually started a few years before its national breakout. By 1998, acts such as Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and The Chazz Cats were not-quite-grizzled veterans of the dance club circuit, well-oiled "swing machines'' with a shrewdly conceived (and well-recorded) blend of minor-key rock guitar and dapper horn charts, occasionally relieved by vibes solo or female voice. To ensure quality control, the collection has been excellently mastered by Stephen Innocenzi for guaranteed track-to-track danceability.
