Time/Life's The First 50 Years is a triple-disc box set where each disc is built around a specific theme: "Duets," "Story Songs", and "Love Songs." These themes are a new, easy way to recycle the same hits that appear on every Kenny Rogers collection like clockwork, but it's an effective move, resulting in an enjoyable collection of the original hit recordings where the enticement is a brand new recording added to each themed disc. Perhaps it's not much of a bait to the hardcore fans, but they're not really the audience for this: The First 50 Years is for anybody who wants all of Kenny's hits but never has bothered to pick them up.
