  • It's always good to have a reason to celebrate, and when a small independent folk label reaches the age of 30, it's definitely an event requiring commemoration. The 68 tracks here, spread over three CDs, serve as a reminder as to the depth and breadth of the Fellside label's catalog. A lot of it is quite stunning, not only tracks from luminaries like Frankie Armstrong and John Kirkpatrick, but also some gems that slipped under the radar, like Kieron Means. What becomes quickly apparent is that, although Fellside's reputation is as a traditional folk label, they've worked with many singer/songwriters, such as the excellent Jez Lowe. But there's still a wealth of superb traditional material here, rarities from Martin Carthy and Maddy Prior, for instance, or recent works from Spiers & Boden or Nancy Kerr with James Fagan. The well-known talent on the label has been quite extraordinary, as are the underappreciated people to whom they've given a chance. Although it's somewhat split thematically, you can dive in anywhere and get a thoroughly enjoyable experience. ~ Chris Nickson
