  • Of all the popular Swing Era (circa 1934-1946) big-band leaders, one of the most forward was clarinetist Artie Shaw. In the early `50s, when many of his contemporaries disbanded their orchestras or peddled nostalgia, Shaw embraced the then-new sounds in jazz, mainly bebop. The double-disc LAST RECORDINGS features the last go-`round of Shaw's small group from 1954. His band included some of jazz's most durable and progressive players: Hank Jones on piano, Tal Farlow on guitar, and Charlie Parker bassist Tommy Potter. Best described as sophisticated small-band swing with bebop leanings, LAST RECORDINGS features Shaw stretching out--not to mention the terse, inspired, and freewheeling solos from Jones and Farlow.
Professional Reviews
Down Beat (5/92, p.34) - 4 Stars - Very Good - "...With neither band or stopwatch bearing down on him, he lays out long, spacious, and gentle lines full of sinewy bends and twists of phrase...full of resplendant grace and elegance..."
