  • You may not have caught this 1998 film, which starred Holly Hunter, Danny DeVito, Queen Latifah and Martin Donovan, but a number of the songs performed on this soundtrack will certainly be familiar--as are the performers. Dean Martin, Etta James and Mel Torme are all featured with vintage recordings, while rapper/actress Queen Latifah shows her range when she takes a shot at singing jazz.
  • Latifah gives the notoriously difficult-to-sing jazz standard "Lush Life" a decent reading, winningly essays a laid-back reading of "Goin' Out of My Head" and lays down an engagingly sweet version of Irving Gordon's "Be Anything (But Be Mine)." Perhaps most suprising of all is the decision to hand the mic to the film's star Danny DeVito for the chestnut "They Can't Take That Away From Me." DeVito's shot-and-a-beer singing style has its own charm, but it's plain cruel to stack that song next to Mel Torme's bell-tone perfect rendition of "Born to Be Blue."
Professional Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (1/8/99, p.66) - "...DeVito almost comes within a spitting distance of carrying a tune, albeit bested by Queen Latifah's creditable three-tune turn as lounge diva..." - Rating: B
