On this concert album, recorded in California in 1951, jazz legend Armstrong did indeed have some heavyweight friends in his company: clarinetist Barney Bigard (who was also a Duke Ellington regular), swing/Dixieland drum legend Nick Fatool, and "Big T" himself, fellow jazz legend Jack Teagarden on trombone and vocals. The program is a mix of Satch's classic hits/standards ("Sleepy Time Down South," "Blueberry Hill, "Royal Garden Blues") as well as lesser-known gems ("I Get Ideas," "Back o' Town Blues").
There's lots of Armstrong's gravelly, wordless vocalizing to go along with his straight-ahead singing, and the band plays with freewheeling joy. They are clearly having a grand time playing for the wildly appreciative crowd. As a bonus, the big band of Les Brown joins them on "Lover's Leap." Whether you're a casual or hard-core fan of Armstrong--one of the most influential figures in American musical history--this album (with its fine recording quality) is a good bet.
