Performer Notes
  • Personnel: Chester Kamen, Brent Paske (guitar); Justin Timberlake (background vocals).
  • With his aptly titled 2007 sophomore album, MAKE SURE THEY SEE MY FACE, promising young singer-songwriter Kenna seems intent on upping his profile. Coming across like the alt-rock counterpart to John Legend, the Ethopian-born performer (whose last name is Zemedkun) is rooted in a bright 1980s New Wave-influenced sound, but FACE is clearly a 21st-century album, particularly with its upfront production, courtesy of Neptunes Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams. Highlights of the outing include the urgent "Out of Control (State of Emotion)" and the funky, post-punk-tinged "Say Goodbye to Love."
Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (p.95) - "On 'Sun Red Blue Sky,' Kenna belts out a first-rate chorus over a beat built on syncopated scratch guitar, evoking classic U2, only funkier."

Spin (p.91) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he left-field sonic alchemy is Kenna's strength, and he hasn't sacrificed it here in the name of mainstream accessibility."

Vibe (p.70) - "[He] has crafted another powerful, deeply felt, throbbing, tuneful album..."

Q (Magazine) (p.145) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[With] layered '80s synths on 'Out Of Control'...[and] slick funk on 'Say Goodbye To Love'..."
