After John Hartford's wonderful hybrid albums, AERO-PLAIN and MORNING BUGLE, he toured extensively as a solo act. This album captures much of that tour's live feeling with seemingly first-take freshness in the studio. It's just Hartford singing, playing banjo and fiddle and tapping his foot (recorded though a piano pickup on a piece of particle board).
These 10 originals have a timeless feel to them, in much the same way as his classic "Gentle on My Mind," but this time with an endearingly scuffed surface. The songs roll out of him with an honest naturalism. It comes as no surprise when he prefaces "Long Hot Summer Days" with the brief mention of a call he received that morning from friends who'd given birth to a son, to whom he proceeds to dedicate the song. It's rare for a performer to capture such a warm intimacy while alone in a recording studio, but Hartford has done so stunningly here.
