  • The late Dinah Washington remains one of the greatest American song stylists ever. There are precious few singers whose work could transcend genre, who were comfortable in more than one or even several styles. Ray Charles and Bing Crosby are two that come to mind; Dinah Washington is another. MELLOW MAMA is Washington in her formative years, when she sang with jazz and early R&B bands in the late 1940s and early `50s. MELLOW isn't nearly as polished as her more famous recordings, but it's exciting to hear Washington's voice developing and her youthful, spunky delivery.
Professional Reviews
Down Beat (7/92, p.47) - 4 Stars - Very Good - "..this would easily warrant the maximum rating if it had only been twice as long.."

Musician (10/92, p.108) - "..a delight...should prove a bracing nightcap for those cloistered souls who somehow imagine that Madonna initiated an era of unprecedented sexual liberation.."
