In the early 21st century, rumors began circulating about the health of renowned metal guitarist Michael Schenker. Some fans even feared the worst -- that Schenker's recording/touring days were behind him. But as evidenced by a world tour in 2004, Schenker was fine and dandy, even issuing a DVD, World Wide Live 2004. Recorded live at the Metalmania Festival in Spodek, Katowize, in March 2004, the 14-track set focuses primarily on favorites from Schenker's UFO years, as well as his early solo material (both considered the best work of his career). He's also put together quite a backing band, especially singer Chris Logan, who sings in more of a classic rock/hard rock voice, rather than the expected 'heavy metal opera' style. Long considered a rock guitar hero, Schenker still proves to be a cut above the competition -- he never fell prey to either the Eddie Van Halen finger tapping craze, nor slapping a Floyd Rose tremolo system on his Flying V and doing dive bombs. Sure he can shred with the best of 'em, but Schenker's playing always managed to incorporate more tone and feel than yer usual guitar hero. Highlights include the exceptional early MSG instrumental, "Into the Arena," as well as such UFO classics as "Mother Mary," "Lights Out," and "Let It Roll," plus a pair of set closing six-string epics, "Doctor Doctor" and "Rock Bottom."
