  • Pianist Steve Million's debut as a leader is an excellent hard bop-oriented session. With trumpeter Randy Brecker, Chris Potter (mostly on tenor), bassist Michael Moore and drummer Ron Vincent completing the quintet, Million (whose writing is as impressive as his solos) contributes six diverse originals, performs fresh interpretations of three standards and Thelonious Monk's "Boo Boo's Birthday" and has arranged sections that are a logical outgrowth of the solos (and vice versa). This is a well-planned and creative set of fresh music. ~ Scott Yanow
Professional Reviews
Down Beat (3/96, p.51) - 4 Stars - Very Good - "...polished unity....The tunes are varied...but they share a basis in formal coherence and smooth, rounded countours. For all his subtlety as a soloist, Million the leader is strong enough to impose the tone and texture of his music upon Brecker and Potter..."

JazzTimes (2/96, p.81) - "...His classical chops are evident throughout, as he tour-guides a sophisticated down-the-middle groove. Million's minions of jazz are exceptionally well-chosen...."
