For all his pop instincts, Grant Lee Phillips is ultimately a folk-rocker at heart (hell, he was even the "town troubadour" on TV's GILMORE GIRLS), which is what makes MOBILIZE such a striking anomaly in the singer/songwriter's discography. While he hasn't abandoned his six-string, Phillips leaps into the digital world, adding layers of electronics and programmed rhythms to his sound. It's a testament to the strength of his vision that the production never overtakes the songs, and in the end, MOBILIZE feels more or less of a piece with Phillips's more acoustic-oriented recordings.
