Performer Notes
  • Shashmaqam is a traditional style of music of the Bukharan Jews that employs simple instrumentation, complex and heady melodies, and Sufi poetry to create lively meditative music. This second entry in the excellent Smithsonian Folkways Music of Central Asia series gathers traditional examples of Shashmaqam, played by musicians from the Academy of Maqam in Tajikistan. Seven singers, a few string players, and a percussionist perform 70 mesmerizing minutes of music. The Grammy-nominated CD also includes a 44-page booklet and a DVD with an interactive glossary and documentary.
