Personnel: Larry Willis (piano); Eric Alexander (tenor saxophone); Eddie Gomez (bass guitar); Billy Drummond (drums).
Pianist Larry Willis has been one of the most versatile players in jazz since the 1960s, having performed and recorded with Nat Adderley, Carla Bley, Stan Getz, and even proto-fusioners Blood Sweat & Tears. Like Herbie Hancock, Willis balances a relaxed lyrical approach with aspects of hard bop, modal, free jazz, and fusion innovations. OFFERING features a killer combo of veterans Eddie Gomez and Billy Drummond and tenor ace Eric Alexander (his tone bright and blues-tinged). This set contrasts earnest swing and engaging grooves with very modern elements, and features sterling and succinct solos by Willis and Alexander.
Professional Reviews
JazzTimes (p.137) - "As a pianist Willis is best known for his powerful drive. He is underrated as a ballad player and composer. Both aptitudes are apparent on the album's most memorable track, 'Ethiopia.'"
