  • Proteges of Nickelback's Chad Kroeger, the Canadian quartet Default excels at a similar brand of heavy, no-frills power rock. On its third studio outing, the group sticks primarily to upbeat and mid-tempo tunes, as exemplified by "I Can't Win," which finds frontman Dallas Smith taking his vocal cues from Audioslave's Chris Cornell and A Perfect Circle's Maynard James Keenan, and "Count on Me," a bold, riff-laden track produced and co-written by Kroeger. Of course, like any hard-rock band worth its salt, Default also has time for a few power ballads like the surprisingly vulnerable "It Only Hurts" and "The Memory Will Never Die," a touching tribute to lost love.
