  • "The Other Sister" uses a time-tested formula of having big names and up-and-comers perform originals as well as a few chestnuts. The result is a decidedly tuneful, mostly upbeat soundtrack. Things kick off with a Bo Diddley-ized "The Animal Song" by Savage Garden who yearn to "Live like animals, careless and free." Lemonheads turn in a cheeky, power trio fueled version of Simon and Garfunkel's classic from THE GRADUATE "Mrs. Robinson." The Pretenders, featuring the hyper-real/romantic voice of Chrissie Hynde, cover the Diane Warren ballad "Loving You Is All I Know" with typical, lyrical panache.
  • Joan Osborne's rendering of Etta James' erstwhile theme song "At Last" is a classy, blues-y and luxurious update. Alison Krauss makes a solid case for silence between lovers when she sings the poignant "(You Say It Best) When You Say Nothing At All." The perils of self-absorption are neatly drawn in Paula Cole's self-penned "Me." Rounding things out are the Soup Dragons covering the Rolling Stones sassy "I'm Free" and Fastball's "She Comes 'Round," an obsessive, "it" girl rave up.
