Pianist Bill Cunliffe tries to expand jazz's repertoire on this CD by performing creative versions of a dozen Paul Simon songs. Although not much can be done with most of the more famous pieces (such as "Scarborough Fair," "Mrs. Robinson" and "Bridge over Troubled Waters"), some of the other numbers (such as "You Can Call Me Al," "Still Crazy After All These Years" and "Feelin' Groovy") are more flexible. Gerald Albright's sax helps out on two songs, guitarist Thom Rotella is an asset and Cunliffe comes up with some surprisingly fresh interpretations even on the warhorses. Although not every rendition is classic, at least this CD did not feature yet another Cole Porter program. ~ Scott Yanow
