An occasional side project of the Montreal band Wolf Parade's Dan Boeckner and his sidekick Alexei Perry, the Handsome Furs play a doomy sounding, stripped-down amalgam of acoustic and electronic rock that's reminiscent of the lighter moments of Suicide and early Jesus And Mary Chain. "What We Had" uses a minimalist backing to dramatic effect, "Sing! Captain" combines a pulsating electronic beat with jangling guitar and Boeckner's mournful vocals, and "Handsome Furs Hate This City" has a chilly yet attractive charm that recalls the gothic early-1980s days of the New Romantics.
Professional Reviews
Alternative Press (p.168) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "On PLAGUE PARK, the duo create wistful electronic torch-songs indebted sonically to the Velvet Underground and Joy Division."
Magnet (p.99) - "Considering how prolific his Wolf Parade partner Spencer Krug has been, Boeckner proves here that he's capable of a few left turns of his own."
