While some avant-gardists unleash a torrent of notes, Japanese pianist Masabumi Kikuchi s approach is similar to that of Paul Bley--spare, judicious (letting silences express themselves), and cerebral. MUSIC OF KURT WEILL finds Kikuchi, bassist Gary Peacock (who played with Bley, in fact) and drummer Paul Motian performing de- and re-construction of Weill's classic tunes While not get-up-and-go music, this is a disc for those valuing deeply impressionistic interaction between ace musicians.
Professional Reviews
Down Beat (3/96, p.42) - 4 Stars - Very Good - "To say that the music on [TETHERED MOON] is understated would be an understatement....[it] rewards as a game played very well, a game played gracefully, with much listening and sharing, and with the beautiful sounds of piano, bass and drums."
