  • 1992's DREAM CAFE marked the beginning of Brown's most artistically fertile period, and its follow-up ups the ante accordingly. True to its title, the album contains some of Brown's most intensely poetic, lyrically complex tunes. Full of sophisticated imagery, the songs here bear the strong influence of Brown's heroine Ferron. As on DREAM CAFE, the dynamic shifts between earthy blues-based songs like the randy "Ballingall Hotel" and more cerebral efforts like the end-of-the-millennium lament "Here in the Going Going Gone." As always, Brown's husky baritone is a unique, intimate instrument that gives his songs so much of their unmistakable personality.
