  • A surprisingly high-fidelity recording of a European date by Quincy Jones's early-'60s big band, Q LIVE IN PARIS CIRCA 1960 shows Jones at the height of the period where he was associated with the Count Basie Orchestra. Indeed, much of this sounds like a bebop-influenced version of Basie's band. The seven lengthy tracks are hot swinging jazz, played by big-band musicians who had their ears open enough to realize that the music did not begin and end with Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. A completely reworked version of the traditional Scandinavian folk tune "Dear Old Stockholm," renamed "Stockholm Sweetnin'," has a jumpy, almost hyperactive quality to it that's far removed from the more lyrical Miles Davis reading that popularized the tune. A more faithful rendition of a popular Davis tune, the early hard-bop masterpiece "Walkin'," closes the show and provides the most exciting solos.
Professional Reviews
JazzTimes (4/97, pp.78-79) - "...[Q LIVE IN PARIS] is evidence of the musicianship, swing and just plain fun that radiated from a remarkable band of all-stars. Although in spirit it resembled the Count Basie band of the period, Jones' outfit exceeded Basie's in adventuresomeness..."
