  • Bob Crosby's 1940 big band is showcased on two radio broadcasts heard on this CD. At the time, Crosby's orchestra was just beginning to de-emphasize their roots in Dixieland (which in retrospect was a mistake), although this CD does include two versions of "Jazz Me Blues" (one unfortunately cut off) by the Bobcats and worthwhile versions of "Over the Waves," Jess Stacy's "Complainin'," "High Society," "Boogie Woogie Maxine," and "Sugar Foot Stomp." Most of the other material is more commercial, with some vocals by Crosby and Marion Mann. The key soloists during the era were trumpeter Billy Butterfield, trombonist Warren Smith, clarinetist Irving Fazola, Eddie Miller on tenor, and pianist Jess Stacy. Although not essential, Bob Crosby fans will find this enjoyable. ~ Scott Yanow
