  • The original Gene Krupa Orchestra lasted from 1938 to 1943. Starting out as a band relying on a Benny Goodman sound spiced with large portions of showy drumming, it gradually evolved--thanks to excellent sidemen and highly competent arrangers--into one of the best and most successful groups of the swing era. On this CD, the band performs in early 1940 broadcasts from the Meadowbrook Ballroom.
  • The band opens with "Bugle Call Rag," a well-known contemporary favorite, and then proceeds on to a beautiful version of "Pyramid," a composition whose rhythmic repetition and haunting melody seemed quite radical in 1940. Krupa himself plays only with his hands on a large tom-tom on this number. Other selections such as "I've Got No Strings" and "Starlit Hour" feature the great Irene Daye on vocals.
