Performer Notes
  • Bo Diddley's signature syncopated shave-and-a-haircut-two-bits hambone beat came to bear his own name as the "Bo Diddley rhythm," and if he had contributed nothing else to early rock & roll, he would have still been important and influential to the shaping of the genre for that alone. But he was also a sharp performer and a fine songwriter, with tracks ranging from chugging rock & roll to doo wop to tender ballads, as this generous two-disc collection of his singles recorded between 1955 and 1962 for Chess Records' Checker Records imprint clearly documents. The signature hits are here, including "Bo Diddley," "Mona," "Road Runner," and "You Can't Judge a Book by the Cover," but so too are dozens of other lesser-known single sides that display this early rock & roll artist's versatility and appeal. ~ Steve Leggett
