In a movie, the soundtrack and score embrace and augment a scene or moment on screen, but a standalone soundtrack is a slightly different matter. It may remind listeners of the movie they just saw, sure, but a successful album soundtrack has to transcend that and work as a viable playlist all on its own or it may increasingly stay on the shelf. This set, the soundtrack to The Sapphires, a 2012 film that chronicles what happens when the Sapphires, an Australian aboriginal girl group, sing for U.S. troops in Vietnam in 1968, works as a playlist on its own better than most, with original versions of songs like Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Run Through the Jungle" and Sam & Dave's "Soul Man" mixed in with well-done covers of Motown and soul songs by the movie cast members, with Jessica Mauboy, who plays Julie in the film, singing nine of these. ~ Steve Leggett
