  • Sepultura: Max Cavalera (vocals, guitar); Andreas Kisser (guitar); Paulo Jr. (bass); Igor Cavalera (drums).
  • Additional personnel: Kelly Shaefer, John Tardy, Scott Latour, Francis Howard (background vocals).
  • Reissue producer: Jeff Daniel.
  • Recorded at Nas Nuvens Studio, Rio De Janiero, Brazil on December 15-28, 1988. Includes liner notes by Don Kaye.
  • Digitally remastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound, New York, New York.
  • With 1989's BENEATH THE REMAINS, Sepultura began a remarkable four-album streak of bold, innovative thrash metal that is nearly unparalleled in the genre. Here the Brazilian quartet transformed from a promising death metal band into a musical force of nature, with Max Cavalera's gruff, primal vocals and potent rhythm-guitar riffs leading the way for the blistering guitar lines of Andreas Kisser and the crushing rhythms of bassist Paulo Jr. and drummer Igor Cavalera (Max's brother).
  • Every selection on REMAINS seethes with intensity, particularly the opening title track, which moves from a haunting acoustic-guitar passage to a fierce metallic barrage, and the record's lead single, "Inner Self," which is marked by Igor's pummeling double-bass work and Kisser's searing, technically accomplished solos. Having grown up idolizing bands like Slayer and Metallica, the young members of Sepultura were on the verge of rivaling their heroes with REMAINS. Simply put, this is one of the best--and most consistent--thrash albums ever recorded.
  • (Note: The 1997 remastered version of BENEATH THE REMAINS features three bonus tracks, including a cover of Os Mutantes' "A Hora E A Vez Do Cabelo Nascer.")

Q (11/96, p.157) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...the great leap forward [for Sepultura], a big Scott Burns uberpunk sound underscoring the band's already terrifying relentlessness..."

Beneath the remains (in my opinion) is where sepultura really began to make their way as a great band, their earlier stuff wasnt that great in my opinion but from here they really began making superb music, songs like inner self and sarcastic existence and hungry are just stunningm,t he bonus tracks are cool too which were added to the remastered eddition

This is the first album that sep wrote whilst under the roadrunner record label and a great labum at that, though schitzophrenia was distuibuted by road runner records it was previously released under another label, this album (like all other bands albums after they sign to roadrunner) is absolulty superb, heavy and great for all sep fans

This album starts off with a mellow acoustic beginning, and you're sitting there thinking "hey, I thought this was a thrash album. Where's the thrash?" So you sit for a bit more and start to reach over to the next button on your cd player when the album totally destroys your face with the unholy boot of thrash. Holy crap, this album rules! Riffs left and right, awesome drumming, and Max isn't raving about some stupid BR00TAL TRYBAL crap yet. More albums should be like this one.

An essential to any fans of fast thrash metal. This is more of a deaht metal release though. With memorable songs like "Inner Self" this is one of Sepultura's best albums, the riffing and vocals are a real standout, the solos are great, the songs are well written and this album is worth getting. Ten out of ten
