Performer Notes
There's little apparent thematic focus on this 18-song doo wop collection, other than that most of the tracks were issued on the Dootone, Modern/RPM/Flair, Specialty, Ebb, and Old Town labels. It's nonetheless a decent mix of familiar and unfamiliar cuts spanning the years 1954-1964, including the classic hits "Stranded in the Jungle" (the Cadets), "Why Don't You Write Me?" (the Jacks), "Eddie My Love" (the Teen Queens), "There's a Moon Out Tonight" (the Capris), "Buzz, Buzz, Buzz" (the Hollywood Flames), "Remember Then" (the Earls), and "Goodnight My Love" (Jesse Belvin). As for the more obscure tunes, highlights are Shirley Gunter & the Queens' uptempo 1954 single "Oop Shoop," one of the fairly rare examples of early female doo wop; the Chanters' ode to their home stomping ground of "Watts"; and the Medallions' swinging "Buick '59." The Crowns' "Possibility," from 1964, is an anachronistic effort that was probably among the last serious attempts by anyone to have a commercial success in the classic doo wop style. ~ Richie Unterberger
