Performer Notes

Arizona singer/songwriter Howe Gelb knowingly looks like a fish out of water on the back cover of this 2006 album, standing in the snow while wearing short sleeves. This notion extends to the music itself, which finds the eccentric Giant Sand frontman bolstering his quirky desert-rock sound with a gospel choir. While the conceit is certainly unusual given Gelb's gleefully rambling lo-fi tunes, it works surprisingly well on many of 'SNO ANGEL LIKE YOU's tracks. The choral arrangements add both soul and structure to Gelb's Neil Young-esque numbers, including the lilting "Paradise Here Abouts" and the boisterous "Howlin' a Gale." Although the record may seem like little more than a curiosity to some, patient listeners will enjoy SNO ANGEL's odd yet fascinating charms.
