Baltimore's Arbouretum play a spiraling, laconic version of classic rock, constructing rippling guitar songs out of the jagged shards left to the sonic crevices of so many dinosaur rock hits. While the band is rooted in certain orthodoxy, songs such as album opener "False Spring" and "Another Hiding Place" effortlessly avoid cliche while still embracing the undeniable majesty of prime time 1960s & '70s jams. In the end, SONG OF THE PEARL isn't so much a monument to past rock gods, but rather the incantations of a righteous splinter group from the church.
