Performer Notes
  • Liner Note Author: Tony Rounce.
  • Ace continues its excavation of Huey P. Meaux's vaults with this second installment of South Texas Rhythm 'n' Soul Revue. This series specializes in what is called (at least on this compilation) the Highway 90 sound, a grooving hybrid of blue-eyed soul, rock-inflected R&B, and swamp pop. It is, unsurprisingly for a sound named after a local thoroughfare, very much a regional sensation, practiced by singers who generally aren't known outside of Texas and Louisiana. The ringers here are a latter-day Johnny Adams and an early Ronnie Milsap, two vocalists who aren't as identified with this joyful bounce as are Warren Storm and Jackie Paine. Those two workhorses anchor the 24-track set but the wondrous thing about South Texas Rhythm 'n' Soul Revue 2 is how individual performers are almost incidental to its success. Instead, what resonates is the consistency in sensibility and quality from all these singers, not so much a testament to the creativity of Huey Meaux -- who, after all, would record anything he thought would bring in a buck -- but rather how all these rocking soul singers tapped into this deep, easy-rolling groove and created a party that existed up and down Highway 90, a party that stretched from state to state and ran from year to year. When you listen to this, it seems as if the party has never stopped. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
