Performer Notes
  • Recording information: 12/05/1971/05/06/1973.
  • This posthumously released LP has five selections from one of bandleader Eddie Condon's final concerts, an appearance at the 1971 Manassas Jazz Festival. "Washboard Blues" features pianist Art Hodes and the other four standards use a couple of overlapping groups with such fine players as cornetist Wild Bill Davison, trumpeter Wallace Davenport, trombonist Herb Gardner, clarinetist Joe Muranyi and Deane Kincaide on tenor and baritone. In addition there is a short parody (titled "Condon") by trombonist George Brunies (who sings and plays piano) which was taped for the ailing rhythm guitarist in 1973 but did not reach him before he passed away. Overall this out-of-print LP is not essential but it does have its strong moments and will be savored by Eddie Condon's many fans. ~ Scott Yanow
