Performer Notes
  • Personnel: Arto Lindsay (vocals, guitar, drum programming); Bill Frisell, Romero Lumbabo, Marc Ribot (guitar); Amadeo Pace (guitar, slide guitar); Vinicius Cantuaria (guitar, percussion); Ryuichi Sakamoto (piano, synthesizers); Melvin Gibbs (bass); Joey Baron (drums); Nana Vasconcelos (cymbals, percussion); Cyro Baptista (congas); Towa Tei (piano strings, samples, drum programming); Yuka Honda (samples); Brian Eno (sound effects).
  • Who would have thought that Arto Lindsay, leader of the No Wave band DNA and inventor of "skronk" guitar, would emerge in the '80s as a gentle neo-bossa nova crooner? At least one of Lindsay's solo albums, MUNDO CIVILIZADO, is an avant-pop masterpiece. But this highly melodic 1995 debut, O CORPO SUTIL (THE SUBTLE BODY), isn't far behind. Apart from the superior songwriting and intimate vocals, Arto's solo projects benefit greatly from the collaborative presence of the Brazilian expatriate guitarist Vinicius Cantuaria, who made his first appearance on this disc. A host of other post-modern New York luminaries--guitarists Bill Frisell and Marc Ribot, drummer Joey Baron, Brian Eno--also contribute. Highlight: a highly credible cover of Joao Gilberto's "Esta Seu Olhar."
Professional Reviews
Q (10/96, p.165) - 3 Stars - Good - "...Linday's avant-rock credentials are impeccable. A surprise, then to find [him]...essaying a series of lilting bossa-nova shuffles....Lindsay proves himself a seductive singer of the kind of pop music he grew up with as a teenager..."

Alternative Press (10/96, pp.92-93) - 4 (out of 5) - "...holds together beautifully, sustaining a mood of airy sophistication throughout..."

New York Times (Publisher) (8/27/96, p.C9) - "...a slight but exquisite album of slow Brazilian-influenced ballads....In these lovely, melodically simple songs, Mr. Lindsay is the slightly bored artist-lover ruminating (occasionally in Portuguese) about life's complexity and sweetness..."
