Performer Notes
  • Audio Mixer: Zdar .
  • Recording information: Bison, Malibu; Motorbass, Paris; South Beach Studios, Miami; The Boat, Silverlake.
  • Returning with her first original music since The Greatest, Cat Power's Chan Marshall unites elements from the different phases of her career into an album that's not just satisfying, but genuinely uplifting. Before making Sun, Marshall battled with a severe case of writer's block, eventually turning to writing songs with largely electronic arrangements -- territory she hadn't explored much previously, and a far cry from The Greatest's Memphis-soaked roots rock. She enlisted Cassius' Philippe Zdar (who has also worked with Cut Copy and Phoenix) and Iggy Pop to help her make this sound her own, and on songs such as "3, 6, 9" and "Nothin' But Time," she does, triumphantly.
Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (p.79) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[S]he goes for gospel-via-disco uplift, layering her trancelike vocal chants over synth beats full of eerie beauty."

Billboard (p.44) - "SUN is darker -- pretty but often brittle and angular like her earlier albums....It finds Marshall continuing to evolve as an artist in intriguing and unexpected ways."

Q (Magazine) (p.95) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Opener 'Cherokee' sounds lithe and impulsive....A thrilling journey of self-rediscovery."

Mojo (Publisher) (p.83) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Her smoky purr remains delightfully unaltered...as she pours it across a smorgasbord of raw electric guitars, urban beats and Latin piano loops..."

Paste (magazine) - "SUN harks back to her earliest albums, when she made odd, retreating pop songs....But there's a greater confidence in these songs..."
