  • These so-called highlights from Lloyd Webber's musical based on the famous Billy Wilder film indeed lives up to their billing, as the disc frequently achieves soaring heights. The music possesses the sweeping grandeur of Lloyd Webber's finest efforts, while the lyrics of Don Black and Christopher Hampton provide an unexpected bite to the soft, lush arrangements. The singing of Glenn Close (as lead Norma Desmond) tends to be a bit overblown, but such minor flaws are incapable of overshadowing this monumental achievement of Lloyd Webber's. Though not as well known as some of Lloyd Webber's other work, Sunset Boulevard boasts some of his finest songs -- listen to "With One Look," "Girl Meets Boy" and "Too Much in Love to Care" and be convinced. ~ Brian Christopher Egan
