Performer Notes
  • The London trio Popinjays -- consisting of lead singer Wendy Robinson, guitarist Polly E. Hancock (who also shares production credits), and bassist Ben Kesteven -- released Tales From the Urban Prairie on the same label that brought the world Curve; most similarities end there. The Popinjays chose to trade in an acoustic-pop sound for accents of country and folk added to, sometimes, good effect. Robinson's lyrics concentrate on the failures of relationships as on "When I Believed in You" and "Moonheart." With a voice that is clear and rather pretty, if somewhat nondescript, Robinson's plaintive musings wear over the course of the album. Not until the closer, the edgy, electric "Drive the Train," does the band offer much diversity. Tales From the Urban Prairie is quaint and pleasant, but not very memorable. ~ Tom Demalon
