  • TEN SILVER DROPS finds New York City's Secret Machines concentrating their epic, expansive energy and sound into tighter, more melodic structures. This, their sophomore album, still features the fuzz and the solos and the thundering drums, but rather than scattering infectious riffs throughout their spacey jams, as they did on their debut NOWHERE IS NOW HERE, the band provide the hooks with a more central place in the songs here. They avoid extremes of dynamics for a more consistent sound, and while the tracks are still longish by anyone else's standards, for the Machines, this album is less prog and more pop.
Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (p.229) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he band's mix of heavy, propulsive rhythms, Brandon Curtis' eerily dispassionate vocals and a whole lot of psychedelic synth and guitar vamping approaches something close to extraordinary."

Entertainment Weekly (p.72) - "[A] spiritual sibling to such previous great, emotionally raw ruminations on shattered personal lives as Phil Collins' FACE VALUE and Beck's SEA CHANGE."

Q (p.118) - Ranked #71 in Q Magazine's "100 Greatest Albums of 2006."

Uncut (p.105) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he Machines stake out territory somewhere between the fount-of-positivity balladeering of Flaming Lips and the motorik pace of Krautrock."

Mojo (Publisher) (p.94) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A]n album that trades emotion with guitar chaos....The band have struck another bittersweet blow for the avant-garde."
