Although credited to Tennessee Ernie Ford, the emphasis here is on "the girls." Lou Dinning of the Dinning Sisters, Helen Forrest, Helen O'Connell, and other female pop singers perform with and without Ford on these recordings from his 1950s radio program. About a third of the 27 tracks are duets with Ford, and he sings solo on only one track ("Sleepy Time Gal"). The real thrill is the opportunity to hear these pop vocalists perform country material: Helen O'Connell does the Pee Wee King hit "Slow Poke," Lou Dinning covers the folk classic "In the Pines," etc. While Ford at least introduces all of these tracks, buyers looking for a straight collection of his recordings may be disappointed by the peripheral role he plays on Tennessee Ernie Meets the Girls. ~ Greg Adams
