  • Brown was enjoying the peak of an astounding career resurgence when he recorded THESE BLUES in 1994. Amazingly, his powers were in no way diminished. It has been said before that Brown sounds here almost exactly like he did on his breakthough hits of the late '40s, when his urbane brand of post-Nat King Cole blues provided a blueprint for such artists as Ray Charles and Chuck Berry.
  • Backed by an excellent small combo, Brown tears into a set of blues and bluesy pop songs. He even goes solo on Duke Ellington's "I Got it Bad (And that ain't Good"). While his vocals are as insinuating as ever, it's Brown's piano playing that astonishes-an amazing mix of traditional blues licks, Erroll Garner-ish block chords, and quicksilver octave passages that seem to appear out of nowhere.
Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (2/23/95, p.76) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...Brown finds his power in the subtle use of his rascally voice. What he lacks in technical range he makes up in emotion deeply felt and elegantly stated....With THESE BLUES, Charles Brown pays loving tribute to his past-and gives a nod beyond the pain to his future..."

Entertainment Weekly (11/25/94, p.78) - "...Brown's sweet-sad vocals and ornate piano work wear well..." - Rating: B+

Q (12/94, p.128) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...His new work (he's now 74 years old) displays undiminished vocal powers and a piano skill that grows brighter with age..."

Down Beat (6/95, p.54) - 4 Stars - Very Good - "...an album of intimate crooning....Brown's delivery, and the band's sound, gives the feel of a small club performance. As if playing for you and you alone, his piano stylings--mixing elements of stride, boogie-woogie and Nat Cole--accompany his husky yet velvety-smooth vocals..."
