Jonathan and Leigh's sole album was half-decent, if hardly electrifying, early folk-rock, with that tentative getting-used-to-electric-folk sound heard on numerous New York-produced records of the mid-1960s. Jonathan Alden's songs (curiously, he is billed as "John Alden" in the composition credits) are fair, pensive numbers with easygoing, occasionally bittersweet melodies that generally stick to folk-rock's most optimistic face. They also sometimes reach for outside material, including a clumsily timed interpretation of Phil Ochs' "Changes," which must be the most covered folk-rock song never to become a hit for anyone who tried. When they attempt "Cocaine Blues," the result is, as it often was for white folk acts, mediocre, yet their cover of Muddy Waters' "Someday Baby" is unexpectedly enjoyable, with an almost garagey freshness. For those heavily into the early folk-rock sound as a whole, this isn't a bad pickup if you find it used for a cheap price. But it's more unrealized promise than a mature, quality effort. ~ Richie Unterberger
