  • Liner Note Author: Bill Wasserzieher.
  • Though 1980's THIRTEEN DOWN was the only release by Bert Jansch's trio Conundrum during its brief lifetime, the album is widely considered one of the folk-blues guitarist's finest. Jansch's acoustic guitar work is typically exquisite, and the backing by Martin Jenkins (flute, mandolin, violin) and Luce Langridge (drums) puts Jansch in an appealing setting, more detailed than his Spartan solo records yet less busy than most releases by his former band the Pentangle (whose singer Jacqui McShea guests on the lovely "If I Had A Lover"). As is typical with Jansch's later albums, the album moves far afield from the English folk and American blues contexts of his early records, with the sprightly "Una Linea Di Dolcezza" delving into continental melodies and other tracks incorporating North African-influenced drones that work surprisingly well with traditional folk melodies.
Professional Reviews
Dirty Linen (8-9/99, p.64) - "...Christened the 'Jimi Hendrix of the acoustic guitar' by no less than Neil Young, Jansch continues to astound listeners with some brilliant renditions of Americna and British folk melodies..."

Record Collector (magazine) (p.96) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The album has that late 70s feel down perfectly: closed mic'd and intimate."
