  • Aside from being one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time, the late Buddy Rich was (and remains) one of the jazz world's more colorful personalities. Rich had both tremendous technique and attitude to spare. TIME OUT is a collection of live recordings drawn from the extensive tape archive of Rich's alto saxophonist Alan Gouvan. Over 15 years of recordings are coming out a little at a time, and fans of Rich and modern (that is, post-1960) big band are all the richer for it. While TIME OUT might not have the consistency of an album recorded at a single session or location, it remains an exciting addition to Rich's legacy. High-energy yet precise drumming, dynamic ensemble arrangements, and general joie de vive are the chief selling points here.
