Performer Notes
  • If you're a salsero, the name Rogelio Mart¡nez carries a lot of weight; the Cuban guitarist/singer was Celia Cruz's producer in the '50s and '60s and is famous for his many years as the musical director of La Sonora Matancera (one of the most legendary salsa/Afro-Cuban bands of all time). But the Rogelio Mart¡nez who is heard on Todo de Mi is a much younger Rogelio Mart¡nez (he was born in 1977) and is famous in a different area of Latin music: Mexican banda. Quite appropriately, this Rogelio Mart¡nez was born in the Mexican state of Sinaloa -- a place that is as important to banda as Cuba is to salsa -- and this 20-song best-of disc underscores the eclectic approach he has taken to banda in the '90s and 2000s. Mexico's Rogelio Mart¡nez is not a purist when it comes to banda; some of these songs favor a blend of banda and romantic Latin pop, including "T£ y Yo," "It's OK," and "No Me Importa Tu Olvido" (which has a bit of a Northern soul edge). And on "Angel Rebelde" (the infectious theme from a Univision telenovela), Mart¡nez moves into somewhat tropical territory. But the charismatic singer can also be very traditional at times (from a banda standpoint), and exuberant tracks like "El Hijo de Catarino," "Plebes Atrevidos," "Me Siento Solo," and "Esclavo de Amores" are perfect examples of pure, straight-ahead, uncompromising banda. Todo de Mi isn't the last word on Mart¡nez's hits; this collection was assembled by Fonovisa, and Mart¡nez recorded for other labels in his pre-Fonovisa days. Nonetheless, Todo de Mi is a rewarding disc that is easily recommended to anyone who is seeking an introduction to Mart¡nez's Fonovisa output of the '90s and 2000s. ~ Alex Henderson
