Performer Notes
This beautifully packaged three-disc set presents Nat "King" Cole's complete trio sessions for the Capitol Transcription Service from 1946 to 1950. (Designed exclusively for 15-minute radio broadcasts, transcription dates were more informal than regular studio recordings.) The laid-back vibe on these 71 tracks is immediately apparent, with Cole and his group easing into jazzy numbers that showcase the charming simpatico between Cole's nuanced piano work and the playing of his fellow musicians (primarily either Oscar Moore or Irving Ashby on guitar and Johnny Miller or Joe Comfort on upright bass). Although Cole's unmistakably smooth voice is featured on some tunes, many of the songs are breezy instrumentals that highlight his often underrated skill on the eighty-eights, making this a collection that will appeal to both his diehard fans and aficionados of small-group jazz ensembles.
