  • Birmingham, Alabama's Remy Zero--singer Cinjun Tate, guitarist Jeffrey Cain, keyboardist Shelby Tate, bassist Cedric LeMoyne and drummer Gregory Slay--play a timeless brand of mature, reflective pop music resistant to trends. While such a statement suggests that the band may never be fashionable, their strengths--including the Tate brothers' gifts for sturdy melodies, intelligent, low-key lyrics and the band's tasteful arrangements--are what makes VILLA ELAINE more satisfying and memorable than most pop records. Highlights include the moody, acoustic "Life In Rain," with its layers of disembodied harmony vocals, and the spiraling chorus of the opening "Hermes Bird." Fans of Crowded House, Wilco or Michael Penn will particularly find Remy Zero to their liking.
Professional Reviews
Q (7/99, p.122) - 4 stars (out of 5) - "...imagine Bends-era Radiohead...with the brevity and hooks of...The Cars....[VILLA ELAINE] is swamped by highlights....Unashamedly pretentious airs...even add to the fecund atmosphere."

Melody Maker (6/12/99, p.35) - 3 1/2 stars (out of 5) - "...vaguely reminiscent of Seventies pomp monsters ELO....it's hard not to be blown backwards by the invention and depth of these songs..."
