Brook Benton wasn't just a singer with a smooth-as-silk baritone voice, he was also a solid pop and R&B songwriter, and he wrote or co-wrote (many with writer and producer Clyde Otis) countless hit songs in the 1950s and 1960s, along with scoring his own hits as a singer. This set spotlights some of the songs he wrote for other artists, including Clyde McPhatter's "A Lover's Question" (Ernestine Anderson's version is also here), Bobby "Blue" Bland's "I'll Take Care of You," the Del Vikings' "Flat Tire," Ruth Brown's "I Don't Know," Ivory Joe Hunter's "I Just Want to Love You," and Benton's own version of "It's Just a Matter of Time," among others, and it shows what a varied, solid, and versatile writer Benton was. ~ Steve Leggett
