Hash Jar Tempo is Bardo Pond and Roy Montgomery--a marriage ordained and consummated in drone Nirvana. Bardo Pond's basement brew of roiling, resinous psychedelia benefits from Montgomery's folk-flavored impressionism. The resultant seven tracks, edited from a mind-blowing jam session, swirl and churn in a rich, redolent sweet-leaf haze.
WELL OILED's tantalizing tantric improvisations are more diffuse than Bardo Pond's tight and concentrated creations-and far more volatile than Montgomery's solo sketches. Fulminating flurries of feedback and flute veer off unpredictably, exploding into expressive fireworks or settling into stretches of lazy calm. Montgomery's taste for the sort of modal musicology heard on Sandy Bull's Vanguard albums informs the more intricate riffing, while the cyclone-force heft of the three-guitar interplay harks back to the cosmic channeling of the awesome Ash Ra Tempel's self-titled debut (1971). Though originally presented as a one-off experiment, the Bardo Pond/Montgomery chemistry proved reactive enough to fuel a sequel, 1999's UNDER GLASS.
