Performer Notes
  • The Fall: Mark E. Smith (vocals); Brix Smith (guitar, vocals); Craig Scanlon (guitar); Stephen Hanley (bass, acoustic guitar); Karl Burns (drums, percussion, bass); Paul Hanley (drums, keyboards).
  • Additional personnel: Gavin Friday (vocals).
  • The high point of the "Brix Period" may well have been the release of The Wonderful and Frightening World of the Fall. Where before the music was tense, jumpy, and anarchic, here it was focused, harder-hitting, and rocked more. To some, it signaled the end of the Fall, but that was an unfair assessment. Granted, the music changed slightly, but it didn't diminish the band's potency. And, for all the time that Mark Smith had dominated the band, it was becoming clear that Brix's talents as a writer and musician were formidable and deservedly taking some of the spotlight. ~ John Dougan
Professional Reviews
The Wire (p.68) - "'Copped It' is closest to the one-chord drones of HEX and PERVERTED; 'Elves' closes the album's first side, one of many Fall rewrites of 'I Wanna Be Your Dog.'"

Mojo (Publisher) (p.123) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Mark E Smith's encrypted lyrics are normality-baiting, while the group play hard-riffing krautabilly..."

Record Collector (magazine) (p.82) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "The eighth album helmed by Mark E Smith, WONDERFUL finds our hero enlisting John Leckie at the production desk, who brings a suitable murk to the likes of 'Copped It.'"

Uncut (magazine) (p.94) - 4 stars out of 5 - "By the end of the four discs and supporting material here, you'll know 'Lay Of The Land' and The Fall better..."
