  • Liner Note Author: Vic Bellerby.
  • These reissued recordings from 1936-1942 reveal a window of the trumpeter Harry James and his big band in peak form, and contains some prime material. Considering the time frame and recording techniques, the digitally reproduced sound on this CD is very clean and listenable. Of the 24 tracks, mostly standards, there are several memorable ones such as "Zoom, Zoom, Zoom," "Life Goes to a Party," both of Count Basie's "One" & "Two O'Clock Jump"'s, "Out of Nowhere," "Just a Mood," "I Found a New Baby," the title cut, and "Ciribiribin." Granted there are only four James originals, but composing was never his forte. The English ASV label has been a reliable source for documenting early American jazz, so thanks to them for this one. ~ Michael G. Nastos
